In a recent article in Wales Online, Trina Smith tells how EMDR helped in her recovery from post-traumatic stress caused by years of childhood sexual abuse.
For years, she had tried to cope with her distress through self-harm, eating disorders and suicide attempts. She had been in and out of hospital from the age of 19, and had even spent a whole year in a psychiatric hospital at one point, being treated for what had been diagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder.
Eventually, Trina was correctly diagnosed with complex PTSD and was offered EMDR. She was sceptical, but was willing to give it a try as a last resort, knowing that she could not go on living if it didn’t work. After a year of processing every single distressing memory, Trina, now 38, is able to think about the past without re-living it. Before the treatment, Trina was not able to look at photographs of herself as a child, but now, she can look through an album comfortably. She can hug her seven-year-old niece without experiencing any distress. Trina is now training as a mental health nurse and has found a new purpose in life – to help others who have had similar distressing experiences.
